History and Accomplishments

The Eisenhower Avenue Public-Private Partnership was formed in August 1994 to promote the development and redevelopment of the 4.5 mile-long corridor to the north and south of Eisenhower Avenue, between Holland Lane and the western boundary of the City of Alexandria, Virginia. At that time there was over 200 developable acres allowing for up to 15 million additional square feet of office space; accordingly, the corridor was viewed as the logical extension to Old Town Alexandria.

During its ten year history, the Eisenhower Partnership, with the support of its members, has been able to accomplish the following:

• Distribution and publication of special Eisenhower Valley edition of Alexandria Street Map highlighting the Eisenhower Valley and its businesses.
• Prepare and distribute retail brochure promoting the Eisenhower Valley to over 1,750 retail commercial real estate brokers.
• Host five “mini” golf classics benefiting both the Partnership and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria raising approximately $85,000.
• Serve as a Member of City’s Ad Hoc Eisenhower Avenue to Duke Street Task Force.
• In conjunction with the City of Alexandria, design and install welcome/directional signage which assist visitors to the corridor with locating public facilities.
• Through our PTO Task Force, work with Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, Waterford Public Relations, LCOR (PTO developer), and interested civic organizations in successfully promoting the relocation of the Patent and Trademark Office to the Carlyle property on Eisenhower Avenue.
• With the assistance of State Delegate Brian Moran, City of Alexandria and AvalonBay Communities representatives, negotiate with VDOT regarding landscaping and uses of bridge construction staging site on Eisenhower Avenue.
• Work with City of Alexandria and Virginia Department of Transportation to promote the construction of the Eisenhower Interchange with the Capital Beltway, which opened on August 1, 1997, providing easy access to and from I-95.
• Members of the Eisenhower Partnership participated in Stakeholder Panels for the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project, culminating in the saving of two buildings on Eisenhower Avenue from demolition.
• Obtained agreement from the City of Alexandria and Covanta (formerly Ogden Martin Systems) for improvements to the Alexandria/Arlington Waste-to-Energy Plant, including changes in truck routing, cosmetic improvements to the building, odor control, and landscaping.
• In cooperation with the City of Alexandria, had “five-star” signs placed at entrances points to the Eisenhower corridor and at various intersections on the Avenue.
• Worked with DASH to obtain bus service between the Eisenhower Metro and downtown Alexandria.

The Eisenhower Partnership continues:

• to work with the City of Alexandria in its study of the west end of Eisenhower Valley under the Plan for Planning;
• to review all new proposed mixed-use development plans to ensure quality development on the corridor in accordance with the Partnership’s streetscape and signage guidelines;
• to host forums for expressing common concerns to the local political leadership as well as input regarding Alexandria legislative proposals affecting the corridor;
• to provide networking and promotional opportunities for businesses on the corridor; and
• to publish its quarterly newsletter, the Eisenhower Ave. News; our bi-monthly newsletter for members only; an annual report; marketing materials promoting the corridor; statistical information on the corridor; and a membership directory.
